Mama Mio

Urban-Latin restaurant Mio offers a Dominican-Asturian feast this weekend. What, pray tell, is Asturian? And why is it being mixed with Dominican fare?

Asturian is anything from the Spanish province of Asturias, a west Iberian land where pork, rich bean soups and cider rule. Washington, D.C. development consultant Joe Rio is of Asturian heritage, but was raised in the Dominican Republic. As part of Mio’s recently launched “Chef for a Day” series, where professional chefs and accomplished home cooks showcase their skills, Rio will cook the dishes he grew up with. The prix fixe menu includes a yucca soup with mojo, the Dominican vegetable and meat stew sancocho, and fabada, an Asturian cassoulet. Sounds like just the thing for the cold, cloudy weekend ahead.
